History of Hakushikan

In 1992, Shozo Kato Sensei (Kendo Kyoshi 8dan, Iaido Kyoshi 7dan) of Shidogakuin started teaching kendo to children in Edison, NJ. He named the dojo Hakushikan (博志館) in memory of his late father, Hiroshi Kato (加藤 博).

In 1994, Kato Sensei began teaching kendo to adults also at Hakushikan. In the same year, under his direction, Rutgers University Kendo Club was formed in New Brunswick to bring kendo to university students as well.

In the following 30 years, Isabella Church Sensei (Kendo 5dan, Iaido 5dan), with tireless effort and dedication, and under continuing guidance from Kato Sensei, grew Hakushikan and Rutgers University Kendo Club and brought kendo and iaido to generations of students in Central NJ.

In 2009, Hakushikan moved to the present location in New Brunswick. Together with Rutgers University Kendo Club, Hakushikan believes in following the will of the late Nakanishi Sensei, Kato Sensei's mentor, and continues to practice kendo together with all like-minded kenshi.

Hakushikan is a Shidogakuin dojo and a member of GNEUSKF & AUSKF.
